OpenMedia confirms Ottawa location of new ultra-secretive meeting to finalize TPP - July 2014

From Steve Anderson, OpenMedia.ca
The OpenMedia team has just confirmed the location of a new ultra-secretive meeting to finalize the Trans Pacific Partnership’s (TPP) Internet censorship plan. It’s taking place in just a few days right here in Ottawa, Canada.

In response: OpenMedia is launching a new easy-to-use Internet Voice tool that will get your voice directly to those behind the TPP’s Internet censorship plan. Add your voice now » » »

We’ve seen industry lobbyists and bureaucrats go to extreme lengths to keep their plans secret before.(1) But this time really takes the cake.  Last week, negotiators quietly changed the location of the Canadian round without telling anybody. Unfortunately though, they didn’t just change the venue, they changed the city too.  That’s right: they moved their negotiations from Vancouver to Ottawa with only a week to go before the talks start. But we’re ready for them, despite the short notice.

We need to show Canadian decision-makers that they can’t hide the TPP from us any longer. Canadians know the agreement would force ISPs to censor the Internet – removing content, and even blocking websites outright.(2) The expense will be passed on to you.

And what better way to make elected officials notice than by putting your voice straight into the negotiation? Under pressure from over 3.1 million people around the world,(3) key negotiators have agreed to meet with us.

What concern would you raise with a TPP decision-maker if they were standing in front of you? Internet censorship? Privacy? New Internet costs? Lack of democracy?

This could be the last time they bring a proper negotiating round to Canada, so we have to make it count. We can’t let them attack the open Internet in our own backyard. We need your voices to go Face-to-Face with Internet Censorship - speak out today » » »

Powerful interests are going to great lengths to keep secrets from you, so they can sign an agreement that gives outdated media conglomerates the power to control how you share, collaborate, and express yourself online.

They hope to finalize an agreement that will globalize Internet censorship in the coming days -- This could be our last chance to reach them face-to-face. We hope you’ll take this opportunity.

Thank you for being a part of this -- our tools and strategies are effective because of you.
Josh, Meghan, and Steve, on behalf of the OpenMedia.ca team.

"The civilized have created the wretched, quite coldly and deliberately, and do not intend to change the status quo; are responsible for their slaughter and enslavement; rain down bombs on defenseless children whenever and wherever they decide that their "vital interests" are menaced, and think nothing of torturing a man to death: these people are not to be taken seriously when they speak of the 'sanctity' of human life, or the 'conscience' of the civilized world." - James Baldwin, Source: page 489 of COLLECTED ESSAYS (1998), from chapter one of "The Devil Finds Work" (orig. pub. 1976)

"Since world war two we've managed to create history's first truly global empire. This has been done by the corporatocracy, which are a few men and women who run our major corporations and in doing so also run the U.S. government and many other governments around the world." - John Perkins, 2005, author of the book titled 'Confessions of and Economic Hit Man'

In the struggle of Good against Evil, it's always the people who get killed. - Eduardo Galeano

"It's not enough to have lived. We should be determined to live for something. May I suggest that it be creating joy for others, sharing what we have for the betterment of personkind, bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely." - Leo Buscaglia, author and university professor (1924-1998)
